The new Sony machines (MXD-D5C, MDS-JB940, -JB640, -S50 and
CMT-PX3,5,&7) all support the new PCLK-MD10 USB based PC connection
kit. This provides MD unit control as well as a digital audio link
over USB. I've heard that you can even do Scale Factor Edit operations
from the PC.

Sony is getting there. The next step must surely be high speed (~4X)
transfer from PC. At that point MD will be pretty close to MP3 in
terms of download convenience, and still way ahead of it in terms of
audio quality, media cost, field recordability, archival storage, home
docking station equipment requirements, desirability, coolness, fruit
fashion colors...
