I used my MDR-NC10 on the Eurostar from London to Brussels (which I suppose is
quite quiet as trains go), before I had to have the Dbass set to 2 and the
volume at 8 before I could hear anything much at all. With the NC10s I turned
the Dbass off, and had the volume at 4 and the sound was great.

Part of the noise cancelling effect is because the earbuds on the NC10 seal your
ears.

However the earbud sound quality without noise cancelling is also pretty good
(better than those supplied with my MZ-EP11)

Thoroughly recommend them.

Adam.
