I was doing some critical listening on my portable MD equipment. I have a
Sony E30 and EP11, and an R50. It seems to me that the E30 and EP11 have
virtually the same sound, but the R50 seems to have a fuller, richer sound.
Now that players and records have gotten so much smaller and much more
battery efficient, I am looking to update my collection.

Does anyone know if certain players or recorders are known to have better
sound quality than others? I presume that my R50 has more than 5 mW
headphone output of the E30 and EP11 (I don't know the specs of the R50), is
this what I am hearing, the higher output, or is there something else
contributing to the sound quality?

These days, they all are small enough and have enough features, and I am
wondering if there are sound quality differences. It's tough to answer
unless you have tried many, but perhaps someone has or maybe certain brands
and models have developed reputations for exceptionally good or poor sound
quality. Do mW output ratings mean anything except loudness?

Thanks in advance.

Tom
