I am firmly against animated banners:
- They slow down load times on pages *drastically*
- They are distracting and more often than not, annoying
- It's one step away from "Flash" banners which are even more annoying
- They are difficult to police - you need to set a limit on file size or
you'll get some HUGE banners - biggest I've seen was 265kbytes.
- They make a site look tacky. The new York times may well have them -
that doesn't make it a good site.
