I am very happy with my old MZ R-30 and I am not thinking of replacing it
yet. Nevertheless, I decided to look for a bookshelf system, because I
needed to be able to program recordings from radio to MD. The DHC-MDX10
seemed to me as the best solution and so I am posting the following review,
to anyone may interest.

The Advantages
-You can digitally adjust the recording level, when copying a CD, while on
pause mode or even on fly. Of course you can also adjust the recording level
when recording from the radio, or another analog source.
-You can very accurately divide a track, by splitting a certain second in 86
fractions.
-There is a 5 band graphic equalizer, with 15 factory presets, but you can
also create your own presets and store 5 personal settings in memory.
- There is a synchro equalizer function, which automatically selects a
preset, according to music genre.
- Variable Attenuation Control System (VACS), prevents clipping and keeps
the sound clean, even when it gets loud.
-Dynamic bass feedback, 2 steps control.
-There is also a synchro bass function, which automatically adjusts the
dynamic bass level according to music genre.
-The radio reception is very good.
-The CD player is very good too.
-There is a double cassette deck, with all the usual functions. The
recording performance is very good, but the recording level is only adjusted
automatically.
-Eventually, the price is excellent for a unit with all these features. It
costs about 500$ here in Greece.

The Disadvantages
-First of all the speakers. Of course when buying a bookshelf, you know that
the speakers will be second class quality, but I confess that I expected
something more, from my DHC-MDX10. The reason for my expectation is that
Sony had advertised very very well the new HOP material their bookshelf
speakers are made of and the new Quick Edge technology they use. So, I
expected something more. The truth is that the speakers have an excellent
performance in bass passages, but they are rather poor in middle and high
ranges. So, they are really impressive if you listen to hip hop music, quite
good for classic-rock, folk, soul and jazz, but disappointing for classical
and chorus music.
-The remote control has weak signal and performs only the basic functions.
-The MD has no date and time stamp.
-The surround function can not trick anybody.
-The appearance is quite aggressive. It took me 2 weeks to get used to it.

My opinion
I believe it s a very good choice for it s price, but I would prefer if Sony
made some improvements, even if they had to raise the price.

Merry Christmas to all,
Yiannis
