I did a lot of research on car MD players before settling on a Kenwood
unit. The KMD-71 is discontinued but can still be bought new (~$300) from
a few dealers. I bought it becuase it has more pre-amp outputs than its
replacement (the KMD-42) plus it has Radio Data System, which the KMD-42
doesn't. So far this unit has been the BOMB. Straight-through output to
the peakers is much better than the amplified factory head unit. Radio
sensitivity is good, MD sound is very good and it has none of the problems
associated with Sony units. The display is clear and readable . . . I
think it's still the best buy for the money.
