KVE asked,

| My new Sharp MD-MT20 failed to write TOC on a very important MD when
| the batteries were low (I was using NiCd's). I assume, that the data is
| still on the disc.

Yes, it should be.

| Is there anyway that I can write the TOC onto the
| disc without destroying what's on it?

You can prepare another disc where one track fills it to capacity and clone
its TOC to the first disc; then every address on the first disc will be in an
active track, and you can divide, resequence, combine, and title as neded.

| I have Sony MDS-JE510 (with turn-on bug), Sony MZ-R30 and that new Sharp
| MD-MT20. Can anyone of those be used to recover the data?

Sorry, but none of those units can do it. (Well, there is a way with the
510, but it is difficult and risky and it invalidates the warranty.) The
method for portables works only on slot-in models, so the MT20 and the R30
are out.

You'll need to find a slot-in portable recorder (the Sharp MD-MS7xx models
are good for that) or a Sony deck that either predates or postdates ATRAC
4.0. Maybe someone near you has one and will do it for you or let you use
it to do it yourself.

(The method with the JE510 is, gulp, to insert the source disc, dirty the
TOC, disconnect the power cord, open the case, force the gears manually to
eject the source disc, force them back manually to insert the target disc,
close the case, and reconnect the power. I do not recommend it.)
