Personally I think the the reason why general public interpet the words MD same as MP3
because people seen the words like "compression", "near CD sound quality", "sampling
at 16bit 44.1kHz".

I even saw people in local newsgroup saying "for MD SP it pump out 292k/s but for MD
LP2 it only pump out 132k/s so it should sound like MP3 at 128k". Well, how will you
interpet this statement if have no idea about the underlying technologies? They simply
ignore all the codec stuffs. Well, personally I also have no idea on what is
precepture audio compression, I just read the paper Sony published years ago. But I'm
lucky to be able to affort a MD portable years ago so I'd be able to convine my
friends to go for MD.

So I believe what Sony is trying to do is to "attract" people of no knowledge of the
MD technology.
