Excerpt:
"Duty and VAT must be paid on all items imported into the United Kingdom,
e.g. goods bought over the Internet. The list below gives the duty and VAT
rates that will be charged on personal importations into the United Kingdom.
The rates shown are the full rates that will be charged. Some items,
depending on where they are manufactured or obtained, may be subject to a
lower rate of duty"

Note that CD Players are listed as 9% duty but Cassette Recorders listed as
zero duty (MiniDisc equipment is not listed). Digital stills cameras are
also listed as zero duty

CDs are at 3.5%

Not sure how the rates change if the goods are marked as GIFT but I didn't
really read the pages very hard. Check the URL for all the details.

As for 'getting around them' - YOU CAN'T. However, chances are you'll be
lucky and they won't charge you duty (or forget to charge you duty), or
they'll forget to ask for the money when they deliver the goods, etc. I've
only SUCCESSFULLY been charged for duty (on CDs bought from america) once.
