It doesn't matter. Since the sound was at one time compressed to ATRAC, it
will always sound exactly like the compressed data.

Under $700? That shouldn't be a problem at all. Sony used to sell a model or
two a couple of years ago in the US (a home deck) that had digital inputs,
and outputs. My frined has one. I don't know the model, but it cost nowhere
near $700 I'm sure because he doesn't have that kind of cash. It was sold at
Best Buy.

What I would do is find the model you want using the equipment browser at
minidisc.org, then find that model on ebay.

"Let me explain a couple of things. Time is short. That's the
first thing. For the weasel, Time is a weasel. For the hero,
Time is heroic. For the whore, Time is just another trick.
If you're gentle, your Time is gentle. If you're in a hurry,
Time flies. Time is a servant, if you are its master. Time
is your god, if you are its dog. We are the creators of Time,
the victims of Time, and the killers of Time. Time is timeless.
That's the second thing. You are the clock, Cassiel."
