[What coupld *possibly* go wrong? - GW]

JUNEAU, Wis. (AP) -- The Dodge County Sheriff's Department is turning to
a volunteer posse to do speeding checks, conduct home surveillance and
perform other non-enforcement jobs.

Sheriff Todd Nehls says the volunteer posse isn't an opportunity "to be
a gun-toting cowboy," but rather to do some work that will save
deputies' time and taxpayer dollars.

Nehls says volunteers in the jail division will check on Huber inmates
at work, stop at the homes of sex offenders to make sure their addresses
are current and perform other tasks.

Patrol division volunteers will use a squad car and radar gun to conduct
speed checks. They will record problem areas, but won't be able to do a
traffic stop.

Twenty-two citizens attended an informational meeting at the sheriff's
department earlier this week. Nehls plans to start the program with
about a dozen volunteers.
