(Washington, DC) -- The FCC may be taking a close look at a new
telephone service from Google as the agency struggles with a balance of
online freedoms versus commercial competition.

Google Voice is one of the newer Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VoIP,
services that use a combination of Internet and more traditional phone
networks.

Skype, Vonage and Magic Jack are others.

"The Wall Street Journal" says regulators are wrestling with rules for
the new industry because those that fit the dial-up era and restrict
traditional carriers like Verizon, AT&T and Sprint don't fit the new
technologies.

Google says its service, that provides free domestic calling, shouldn't
be regulated at all.

The company has released software that works on BlackBerrys and some
smart phones already.
