I once had a situation where CSS (in MediaWiki:Common.css) was positioning another element (masthead) at the top of the page, and obscuring (z-index) the auto-complete text that should have shown in the text box. It's a stretch, but if you're not getting any errors, then maybe the text *is there* but you can't see it.
