There's a recent development of a subset of s3tc dubbed s2tc, (plausibly) avoiding the patents involved while being somewhat compatible (s2tc compressed stuff is of a bit lower quality, but decompressible by existing s3tc hardware, while s3tc compressed stuff will have some artifacts but often be better than nothing when decoded by s2tc decompressor - this latter should happily be a rare need anyway, as mostly the decompression is done on the GPU).
There is a libtxc_dxtn compatible interface library for this, so it should be pretty much drop in for any driver that supports the external s3tc handler. Should IMHO be considered packaging in main, to provide workable if a bit lower quality compressed texture support for Mesa - something which is required by many OpenGL programs. Of course, replacing it with the full s3tc library should remain an option afterwards. So "Provides: libtxc-dxtn" or something.
