JCAHO has visited both of our hospitals this year employing the new "Tracer" methodology.  The only direct contact with IT was with the Administration Surveyor in his HIM session.  They asked the usual questions about security, disaster planning, working together etc.  We used our development of Care Plans in NUR as an example of a Quality initiative and that was well received.  Since we are in the process of eliminating paper charts they were very focused on our clinical staff's ability to maneuver through NUR, Departmental and PCI and quickly and efficiently find the information that supported whatever they were tracing in each instance.

Hi Everybody, at the MUSE Conference in Orlando I’m going to be leading the MIS Peer Group Session on Thursday Morning.  After sending several emails asking what you would like to see or talk about (with no responses), I’ve decided to talk about JCAHO, it’s new standards, and how it affects MIS.  We will probably also discuss MIS changes in 5.5.  If you have other things that you’d like to discuss, please email me.  I would also LOVE to have someone volunteer to do a 5-10 minutes Show & Tell Presentation on something you’ve done in MIS, or even something you learned off the L-List that solved a particular problem you were having.  Chances are, someone else is having the same problem and needs to hear what you have to say.

If JCAHO has been to your facility since January, would you please send me an email (this week) and let me know some details.  What were they focusing on?  How did it affect you in MIS?  Or if you’re not an MIS employee, how did you rely on MIS to assist with what the surveyors needed?  How did the new Data Tracer methods work?  Did they tour your departments?  What questions did they ask pertaining to MIS Department procedures?  Security?  Confidentiality?  Safety and bar-coding?
