If you use the barcode function in NPR and have the barcode be the Patient number for this visit, then it will be accepted and understood any place that is asking the patient prompt.
In HCA we had a fix put into eMAR that keeps track of whether the patient was scanned or not. I can't say if it is available in mainstream or not. Of course, if you are implementing scanning the patient for ID purposes elsewhere then it might be impossible to automatically prevent them from doing a spacebar/enter kind of thing. But, that simply means that some kind of physical monitoring will have to happen. I don't recall anywhere to define that. -----Original Message----- From: Massey, Brent [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, December 10, 2006 7:24 AM To: Witt, Sharon L.; Judy Hill; Meditech List Subject: RE: [MEDITECH-L] Positive patient ID and BMV Sharon, One way to prevent users from scanning a patient identifier found on other documents is to create a unique barcode identifier just for patient wristbands (one with an additional alpha numeric character, for example). This unique barcode identifier would be printed upon admission and should then be made available for re-printing only by certain individuals, say house supervisors. By creating this unique identifier and then restricting re-printing access by certain individuals, you will be able to eliminate the shortcuts users create in overriding the 5 R's. We would like to prevent users from scanning a barcode found on some paper documentation rather actually using the wristbands. We're preparing for BMV but are already scanning for point of care, with some users finding ways to get around scanning wristbands.
