We have created NPR reports used to label/repackage drugs with code 128
ndc numbers (ndc.din.number) for BMV. This has worked great for
products that do not come from the manufacturer with readable bar codes.
However, I'd like to use the '.NDCEX.1' ndc format so that I can also
embed the product expiration date in order to take advantage of the
expired products feature of BMV. I've got this working via NPR, but I
need some help understanding how to properly pad/unpad the ndc number.

Example:
 - A drug's true ndc is "0173-0344-47".

  - Primary ndc in the drug dictionary is "00173034447" (11 digits) -
this is padded

 - The ndcex.1 format equivalent is "301730344471mmyy" (where mmyy is
the expiration of the product). The first digit (3) is always
concatenated. The next 10 digits are now the unpadded primary ndc
number from the drug dictionary. The twelfth digit (1) is the
position/segment (options are 1-3) that the padded zero was removed from
(in this case the 'labeler code' section of the ndc vs the product code
(2) vs the package code (3)).

I have verified that this all works in Meditech, but I can not figure
out the logic/criteria of how to look at Meditech's padded 11 digit ndc
number and decide if this is really a 4-4-2 format vs a 5-3-2 or a
5-4-1. The example ndc could have been 0173-0344-47 or 01730-334-47 or
01730-3344-7.

Does anyone already do this or know how to correctly determine the true
10 digit ndc format from a Meditech padded number?
