The implication, of course, is that Android is not run as an open source
project, which is true. Android is run as a proprietary platform
distributed mostly with an open source licence.


This certainly gives it some extra leverage in the marketplace, because
OEMs can go & look at the guts & change stuff if they need to, but
avoids all the perceived pitfalls of open source development - the
bikeshed discussions, the long decision making process in projects run
on consensus, the inability to get future commitment on almost anything...

But all those disadvantages are not inherent in open source development.
They are incidental in projects that do not have strong leadership and
good community processes. So of course by ensuring we have good
community processes and good, strong leadership, we can avoid them all :)
