As the 3 founding members of MeeGo (Intel, Nokia, LF), the assumption is that their employer should pay for their devices. In many cases, the employer will pay for these types of devices for key projects even if the person is doing the development for "fun" as a way to support the project as a whole. I put the disclaimer: "contact Dawn outside of this program for exceptions" for exactly the reason you mentioned above. I'll set aside a few devices outside of the MeeGo program that I can use for any exceptions. I expect to get a few of these requests, but I'd like to handle those separately.
