Event device kernel interface is not a must, but encouraged if you're implementing kernel driver. The accelerometer and magnetometer adaptors of sensorfw most likely work out of the box with that. If you already have a kernel driver with some other interface (using sysfs) you might need to write new adaptors for sensorfw. For accelerometer with a sysfs interface, you might want to take a look into mrstaccelerometer adaptor code.
