What was the ./configure command line you used? (Note that you have to run
this before running make)

Also, make sure the account you're using has full rights to the relevant
folders (for 'make', everything where the source is located and all
subdirectories; for 'make install' the /usr/local/(lib|bin|include), etc, or
wherever you may have specified with the ./configure --prefix=... switch.
