This is an old horse but I once created a patch to open new files in
tabs of existing meld instances, using dbus of all things.

One of the original posts is here
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/meld-list/2007-July/msg00015.html
and the bug concering it is here
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=453670

I did tweak the patch for meld 1.1.5, latest version can be found at
http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~kwysoc/hacks/meld-dbus.1.1.5.patch
the thing has been used in production by me and others since meld
1.1.2 without any problems.

There's a deb here:
http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~kwysoc/debian/binary/meld_1.1.4-0ubuntu2_all.deb
for those that want to give it a shot w/least hassle on ubuntu.

There is symmetry in chaos, and chaos in excessive order.
Though you may see heaven or hell, remember that it is your mind which
creates them. Avoid grasping the one or fleeing the other.
