Pele,
I'm 18, and an on my fifth car, third datsun, and second datsun 1600, and
trust me, it's not just rust that won't pass a RWC! I personally would STAY
AWAY from a cheap-ey, for you don't seem like a guy who needs a big project
car, just a car that is slightly more accepted in society than a barina!!
Be extra careful when you get a totally modified 1600, especially if you are
in Melbourne, because the regulations are pretty tight with modifying a car,
and you could end up deeper in than you ever imagined. A larger engine is
always a good thing, as-long as it is still an L series (you won't need to
get an engineer's certificate), but often when the struts/brakes/drive-line
is modified, the registraion and roadworthy'ers will give you more than your
fair share of shit. Even down to the seats - try to get one with fairly
stock or stock-looking seats, because I know I got knocked back on modified
seats on my last one. When you go and look at them, take a magnet with you,
and go over the bottom of the doors, quater pannels, the sills and anywhere
else you think looks a bit dodgey, becuase people can do some truely amazing
things with fibre-glass - which is a major pain in the ass.
The best thing to do is to get it checked out by a mechanic before
purchasing it .... and good luck - Chris
