You've probably had a hundred different responses on this, but here my bit.
Your BIL is pretty right, 2 pak can kill you as it has carcinogenic
properties. It is the best paint , IF you have a spay booth and breathing
protection. It is hard so it resists damage and it is glossy off the gun so
it doesnt need further buffing.
I think acrylic lacquer is next best as is easy to apply and blend, if
repainting is necessary. It can be easily buffed to a flat glossy finish and
it dries quickly.
Enamel dries more slowly, so it can run if it goes on too thickly. Enamel
dries glossy and if it goes on poorly it cant be buffed flat easily, you
need to sand back flat and recoat.
