Chris,
On a Nissan/Datsun mounting the struts either way does not matter at all. I
have spoken to numerous engineers about this over a very long period of time
and they all have told me as long as there is no contact with steering links
or body parts on the full lock to lock test there is no problem. Another
area to pay attention to is to make sure that the brake lines don't touch
the strut etc during compression testing and bump testing and that's about
it. AFAIK Nissan has never fitted directional brake components on any of
it's rear wheel drive production models, someone out may know different.

regards

Terry

does it not matter whether the struts are mounted in reverse, becasue some
people are saying to mount them with the calipers foward and some at the
rear.....I always thought they went at the front..
