Yeah, the only "real" measurement would be from chassis rail to pivot point.
By measuring from the bottom edge to the pivot point is assuming that the
cross members are all the same dimension from top to bottom. I did give this
some thought, but the concrete in my driveway was way cold and I was too
slack to actually get down and dirty (and cold) to do the right measurement.

I found that they're not terribly consistent. Two x-members which have
identical
control arm pickup points measured from the bottom edge of the x-member *may
not* be the same once installed in your car. I had to measure the pickup
points
relative to the flange where the x-member attaches to the chassis to be
sure.
Whether this is manufacturing tolerance or accident damage or just the car's
been jacked up by the x-member I don't know.
