Loaded question time but I will respond in a friendly manner.
I'm sure there is plenty I don't know, but when you get to my age you have
learnt a few things along the way - sob memory isn't what it used to be but
you learn to write things down or organise it in a pile (:- and learn how to
use a computer to your advantage. It's pretty easy to get knowledge these
days but when I was your age I had to do things like go to a library and
read - which is something the younger generation finds difficult to
comprehend (I'm thinking of my kids when I say this).
I left this one for 24 hrs but the boys were having trouble with it so I
decided to help them out.

The NRMA SE Aus guide gives these distances:
Brisbane to Sydney
via Pacific Hwy 977 km
via New England Hwy via Newcastle 1005 km
via New England Hwy via Putty 1010 km
(This is my favourite route from Brissy to Canberra in the Datto as it is as
close to a ring road as you'll find in Sydney. You turn off the New England
Hwy just past Singleton into Route 69 (easy to remember?) and it comes out
at Windsor just up the road from Wardy's place and you cruise down the
Northern Road (still on 69) and join the Hume Freeway just past Narellan at
Campbelltown.)
Sydney to Adelaide
via Mid Western Hwy 1416 km
via Barrier Hwy (Dubbo & Broken Hill is a nice drive and change of scenery
but it's ) 1668 km
via Hume & Sturt Hwys 1417 km
Sydney 0
Goulburn 193
Narrandera 561
Mildura 1022
Adelaide 1417
Canberra to Adelaide would be around 1200 km (we pick up the Hume at Yass
which is ~80 km past Goulburn)

It may take a little longer from up here but I would still like to get there
one year. Please keep us informed of the date as things get closer. It would
be a great to meet with those from Sydney and head down together. Not having
done the trip before, how long would it take to get from Sydney to Adelaide?
