Double de-clutching allows the gears a little time to equalize speeds and
mesh better, providing a quicker change on straight cut gears and less
stress on components. Others may disagree with me, but synchros slow down
your gear change speed in my opinion. As a classic example, I have machined
oil relief's in synchros (conical) in boxes before and this has made the
shift faster as the oil was allowed to escape the surfaces quicker. I have
rallied with a Datto four speed with a straight cut crash 2nd and 3rd and it
was very reliable and very fast shifting with double declutching. Extremely
noisy though.....
I don't see any need to double declutch on the road or with a std box, but I
certainly would if using a box that you want to look after. Just be careful
you practice and GET IT RIGHT as 0.25 second confusion at the feet can cause
a prang, also dyno your car and take note of the torque curves so that you
can analyse your gear changes and change at optimum revs for smooth torque
delivery.

Subject: heel/ toe,double shuffle Errol/ List
Ferral/ List,
I have been working on various driving tech. and wanted to know if any of
the racers out there could tell me why I need to de-clutch in the heel- toe
double shuffle/ clutch tech.? Going down the gears, why do I need to
de-clutch in neutral, give a rev, re-clutch then engage the lower gear? Why
not just leave the clutch in if I have synchroses?
Thanx
Justin
