Terry,
Have you tried any other gearing with your FJ/510. I have the 3.7:1 open
R180 and a 3.9:1 clutch pack LSD R180 that I use, though the 3.7 has
recently started clunking. I found very little difference between the two
ratios other than it seemed to boost up a little bit quicker with the 3.7
though traction is more of a problem with the open diff.
I have recently been offered a 4.3, 4.8, or 5.1:1 diff but I think anything
lower than the 4.3 will be completely useless. The 4.3 I would like to get
for the short hillclimb tracks around Melbourne.
How do you find the 4.375 gears?

[This was the diff we used mainly as we ran the car at Wakefield Park which
is a s tight as, perfect there but not that good at Bathurst as we were flat
out by the second hump and sitting on the rev limiter till the chase]

Have you tried anything lower?
[No]

The only advantage I can see of the 4.8 or 5.1 ratio's in an FJ/510 would be
the ability to take off in 2nd gear for motorkahna's or ultra tight
hillclimbs/go kart tracks. How ever this is not something I would put my LSD
through(I've just got it back from a rebuild) so I have considered getting
a full spool machined up for the diff to eliminate the spider gears which
seem to be the weak link. This set up would hopefully allow 2nd gear
launches with a 5:1 without lunching the diff.

[We never had diff trouble even with the CIG R160, it's a bit rumbly though
but it still works and we were sticking 200 hp through it ~250-260 bhp, I've
still got the engine and it's been rebuilt with good stuff in it, it should
crack 250 hp or destruct in the process]

Any idea if an FJ20T 5spd will handle that sort of abuse?

[The ZL71 Skyline box is pretty tough, Ben snapped an idler shaft at the
Park picking up 3rd one day, totalled it but he said he missed a change
earlier on and it wasn't sounding too good after that - not worth fixing but
we got another one for $400 from Sydney and it was still very tight and I've
got it in the garage]

Regards
Jake

Does the LS mean what I think it does, Limited Slip ?

That R180 3.9 in a limmo sounds sweet.  Where do I look for one of those ?  (Straight line acceleration is becoming a problem !)

Mark,
I missed replying to this one.

Diff ratio at the moment is a 3.9 R180LS from a Skyline RS Turbo

FJ car we run a variety of diffs but usually a R180LS 4.375 from a Navara 4x4 which I used mainly at Wakefield Park and Ben (co-owner) could get around there in 1:14's which is very quick, I think Soobies with awd are only getting 1:12's today. Other diffs used were 3.7 R160 CIG, R180 4.1 open, good fun with this as you hardly needed to turn to go around a corner. With the 3.7 in it was very fast but being locked was a bitch to drive in the wet especially. Locked diffs on tar aren't my favourite but on dirt it was interesting.

Subject: diff ratio

G'day again Terry, I forgot to ask last email, what diff ratio are u running now & what were you running when your Fj was humming.  I'm considering getting a second R180 with a 3.7 or 3.9 and swap it around with my 3.54 when I want to have a fang, and back again for going on trips etc.

Cheers,

Wardy
