Eddie,
Water cooled turbo's are less susceptible to coking bearing oil feed holes
(as probably happened to yours and then no oil supply to bearings). The
water cools the housing a lot quicker and keeps it cooler so the oil
doesn't carbonise when the engine stops.
Check the archives for posts on FJ turbos and turbos in general.
The FJ should go really well in the 710SSS. Sounds like fun to me.

Hi folks,
I decided to get on with getting my FJ20DET sorted out. It stared making a
high pitched whine when it was cold so I took a guess at the turbo being
buggered. I took it off today and sure enough the bearings have gone
completely , the noise was the intake wheel rubbing on the housing. I'm
gonna see if I can get it repaired but before I do I thought I run a few
question by you all.
1) what kind of turbo is it? It's a stock Gazelle RS-X Jap model. Here's

2) should I get this unit repaired or is there a better choice of turbo for
this engine? I'm planning to rebuild it completely hopefully with forged
pistons and plan to run about 15psi and an intercooler.It has huge lag as
it
is now but this could be down to the turbos condition and the dodgy ECU.
The
710SSS it's going in will run a 3.9 diff as opposed to the Gazelles 3.7 and
will have smaller diameter wheels so maybe this lower gearing will reduce
apparent lag anyway?
3) all our CA18ETs here have water cooled turbos...is this a good idea or
even necessary ? Just wondered as the FJs isn't.
4) are there meant to be gaskets of some sort between a) the turbo and
manifold and b) the turbo exhaust housing and the part with the wastegate
mounted in it?
5) there are two very tiny cracks, one either side of the wastegate
hole..is
this okay?
Bear with me on this...I'm entering uncharted territory!
