Nick,
The long boxes have been fitted to Stanzas by many ppl, could even be a few on this list. I've seen a few Z18ET & one SR20DE conversion and the gearbox wasn't a real problem (shifter wise although the consol was missing or modified in most cases).

Terry, Errol et al,
I should keep my options open when going shopping for parts this w/end.
Modifying what I have sounds like a lot of work and my shift lever will probably end up fouling the handbrake, or being absurdly unergonomic)
I have trawled the archives, but still need some clarification on short case 5 speeds.
A 'stumpy' g/box comes from an early skyline...these are hard to find, so..
What about Z-cars, specifically 280Z's (there are a couple wrecking at the moment)

Zed boxes are all +130mm over Dogleg, nice box though.

Any other early L6 configured cars (I know 240K is a short case)
240K 5 speed is also a +130mm box over Dogleg, only the very early 4 speeds were the flat pan short box and they had the monkey motion shifter, definitely a backward move over the Dogleg. I haven't seen one of these for years, hopefully their in Datto heaven.

Any info on ratios?
The L6 boxes have a slightly closer ratios, but start a little higher as first gear is around 3.3 and 3rd is around 1.4. Usually it's better to have more HP than the L16 to run a L6 box in a Stanza, although with the 4.375 SSS diff it's not going to be a real problem. A L20B would be thirsty and not that suitable without a lot of work to get it to rev, I'd suggest the 4.111 GX 5 speed or 3.7 (4sp & Auto) diff if you have a L20B. The L18SSS as I ran in both my Stanzas, in my SSS I ran the 150hp L18WBP with stock 4.375 diff and it was very quick, but in the GX a stock 120hp L18SSS with 2xSU and 4.111 diff was still very nice to drive, and a lot better after a DCOE45 was fitted.

In my opinion the only real alternative standard H pattern box in a Stanza is the Stumpy unless you do a full on Z18ET or better still a CA18DET would be my choice in the Stanza if I had my time over with one.

Thanks guys,
Nick

Nick,
You've taken on an awful conversion here as the Stanza rear mount is integral to the body and unless you make up a fancy rear cross member you are better off with gas axing the standard mounts and converting to a Bluebird or Skyline type cross member. I'm not sure which way I'd go if I had to do this, probably design a fancy xmember.

Subject: Stanza update - G/box

Errol et al,
Have just installed motor and G/box into Stanza (L20b and B/Bird 5 spd.)
It doesn't fit...
Bugger isn't it.

The problem is similar to the Datsun 1600 & long 'box conversion that people have discussed on the list before.
It's much worse than a 1600 conversion.

I have the added problem that the crossmember won't fit even if I reverse it, and the shift-lever hole will have to be extended rearwards.
These are not major problems, the tailshaft that won't fit is, however.
Shorten it, standard practice and not very expensive.

I have 2 B/bird G'boxes already, so I don't want to go and get a stumpy, unless someone wants to swap :)
You hit the best option here, a stumpy bolts straight in, has standard H shift pattern and has better (for some hot L4's) ratios too.

Also, I don't like the Stanza 5-Speed because it is just the 4 speed ratios with an overdrive 5th - as far as I can tell.
So do most of the L4 including Bluebird 910 S1& S2 5 speeds, the S3 (CA20) which doesn't fit easily (bell housing changeover req'd) is spaced more like the stumpy which is a L6 box from the R30 2.4E

Are there factory tailshafts that will fit my new setup, e.g Gazelle, 1200, Sunny etc...
Pass, unless anyone has some data on these it will cost you a $1 to visit a pick-n-pull with a tape.

What length are the modified 1600 tailshafts?
For this combination a 1600 would use a 940mm shaft which is 130mm shorter than standard. Stanza will use -130mm shaft, I can't recall how long a Stanza shaft is but just measure yours (centre uni to centre uni)

Failing that I'll have to get mine shortened.
Probably unless you're very lucky - nothing that short comes to mind from another model.

What do you counsel?
Regards,
Nick
