Yep The Pooley 510 rocket and my Sunny 1600 giant killer.
It was a beautiful day and very well organised. No accidents of any
consequence were noticed or major blowups. Every one had lots of runs if
they wanted them. I got in about 60 -70 laps for the day. 45 litres of
Optimax +20 litres spilled from a stuffed fuel cap.
Both cars were going & handling extremely well. We had a flaggy from
Historic Racing Association comment on this fact at the end of the day.
The training days are a good time to sort out handling. braking and engine
problems etc at race speeds. As they say "racing speed sorts out the breed"
Well the Sunny split the idler bushes as it slid into a ripple strip
chasing a 300ZX. 45 minutes later with a Nolathane replacement from Repco
it was back out and kicking butt.
I had backed of the rear roll bar as the car has an open diff and I wanted
to keep the back axle on the deck for more bite out of corners. This
resulted in the front wheel being up to 30 cm's of the deck as we were
being followed by an Elfin clubman and a hot 240Z.
The Pooley mobile was very quick through the corners and using its little
IRS R160 rear to maximum ability. I sat on the heels of the beast for a lap
and am always amazed at how much bite the 1600 can get out of a corner
without an LSD or a locker.
The Sunny has good handling and excellent brakes for a small car (FIA works
4 spot calipers and ventilated's on the front). This allowed me to give
all the heavy boys (300ZX's etc) a headache in braking duels into corners
One 300ZX was trying that hard that the smoke of his front brakes was
scaring him (Fire?) He pulled over and motioned the Sunny past, just as we
going onto the back straight.
There were two good looking 1600's there although I didn't get a run
against them though to see how quick they were.
Trev Pooley was unofficially timed at a 1:39 (with his pick a part $45
dollar engine!!!) Must have been a good day in the manufacturing plant
with tolerances right down huh!
There is a return bout scheduled for next season, as the sunny was
humiliated to be defeated by the 510. (I must be getting past it and old
age setting in.)
