Rick, see my reply on paint colour.
I have plans to start on the body painting it in Feb next year. Shouldn't
take more than a month or two. Then its reassembly of all mechanicals and
suspension after cleaning, repainting or metal coating where appropriate.
Original engine will be freshened up with a block clean, rings, bearings and
seals. It starts easily and runs fine, but its a bit smoky on startup. It
really just needs a good hard thrash to clean it out and rebed the rings as
its only rarely been started in the last ten years, might just do this.
I have a ideas for building a second L16 with power/reliability upgrades
internally, It will look stock L16SSS externally. This engine will be for
'motorsport' use to avoid damaging the original.
Gearbox and diff are fine, just a paint required. Wheels are Globe Bathurst
mags. I may change to Performance Superlites, or fit a set of Hustlers I
have. They look great on Datto's. Original trim is like new, so it goes back
in.
I plan to metal polish all the alloy bright work, all grill bits, strips
under doors; and rechrome door handles, bumpers, tailight surrounds.
(I have done the metal polishing bit on my current restoration, the '72
Auto. It looks good!).
Toying with installing air, but originality will probably win here. If I
find an original 1600 aircon system, or something like one, it will go in.
Target finish by mid year 2001.
Oh yes, I will get a 65 mm exhaust fabricated with a three bolt flange
joiner forward of the gearbox, so I can easily bolt in my twin webered L20B,
for the "odd occasions" when additional grunt on the road is necessary. It
must have a 96DBA muffler to create the original sound.
That's about the plan for my 1600SSS.
