Eddie,
The emery cloth type flap wheels are great for finishing off with. They get rid of any dips or bumps you might create using the burrs.

I'm with Errol on this one. I've just done some work on an L series head with an air die grinder and burrs and it was very quick and easy. You have good control but watch out they cut ally really fast! And wear eye protection! The chips fly everywhere! I think I might finish mine with some abrasive like emery cloth but should be able to do that by hand. The carbide burrs were good for smoothing out the inside of the block too. Eddie

James,

There were similar kits out about ten years ago. The problem with the kits was you ended up with a lot of coarse wheels that were not much use and not enough fine polishing wheels. There are better wheels around now where the grit is contained in a rubber like base. They are more expensive but do a lot better job quicker.

The cartridge roll mandrels they sell you in the kit are easily made using a piece of 1/4 rod and cutting a slot in with a hack saw. Most good automotive shops also stock the flat grinder wheeels in either soft or coarse abrasive grades. I find that an electric die grinder and some good P&N Tungsten Carbide burrs will beat the heck out of trying to grind material away. Even cast iron is easily cut with a carbide burr.

Cheers

Hi Everyone

I stumbled across the following DIY guides for Head porting and
block prep... they are working on V8 stuff, but the concepts are the
same for 4 cyl's....  thought they might be of use to someone...

Standard Abrasives - Do-it-yourself Guides

Has anyone ever seen or tried one of their kits?
