OK, good to see I'm not losing my touch.
Compression pressure low, wild cam, only been rebuilt recently -
I'd be checking the valve timing very carefully, sounds very much like
you're out a tooth or set on #3 position and there's too much overlap.

I had a play with my distributor on the weekend and found the weights were
actually siezed. I stripped it down and gave it all the once over and a
clean and regrease and it now works as advertised. The engine now runs well
at 18 deg btdc. It still will not get any closer than that. I also did a
compression check. and found I have only got 750-800 kpa and standard is
supposed to be 1170 kpa. I am now wondering weather I will have to strip
down the engine and get the head decked to raise this a little.
Would low compression be making this problem worse or causing this problem.
This is only about 60% of the normal compression. If so how do you work out
how much you need to get decked off to raise the compression?
