Chris I run flat top pistons in my L16 rally engine without problems but they do have small valve recesses. These are a standard nissan item but I don't know the part number.
You should be able to tell if you need the recesses by doing a dummy install with plasticine on the piston tops & turn the engine over fully 2 times. Measure how thick the plasticine is where the valves have gone. You need at least 1.5mm clearance on inlet & 2mm on exhaust from memory.
