hi, linishing will NOT  strengthen the crank shaft. linishing takes a very, very, very tiny amount of the crank. in other words, if the crank is say .010" then u linish it , u still use  the same size bearings. i would tend to opt for a regrind so that  the  journals are  exact.

if you want to strengthen a crank shaft, shotpeening  wuill definately help,  and nitriding a  crank  will protect the journals.
a friend of mine nitrided a hemi 6 crank, the upper half of bearing got smeared into the  bottom half  of bearing and the  bearing journal was perfect...

Subject: Crank linishing question

Here's another question for all you out there in datto land,

I talked to the local machine shop today and after I get everything balanced, the machinist wants to linish the crank to make sure there are no imperfections on the journals.  While I have nothing against this or the extra 60 bucks, I was just wondering if this will further strengthen the crankshaft?

Cheers
