Apart from the rewiring/relays and alternator upgrades mentioned previously,
the actual lights are the next important bits for good night time vision.
Aircraft landing lights that "bolt in" replace the standard high beam.
These can be 100W or 150W, either requires the aforementioned wiring and
power upgrades.

For the outer lights you cant go better than cibie high/low beam replacement
lenses with 130/90W QI globes. Always turn off high beam if you stop - high
beam needs lots of cooling air to keep the filament alive. You wont need
extra driving lights on the road with this combo.

For rallying in the forest at night you need better than the landing lights,
which have a long central pencil beam and dont throw their light widely. I
used Cibie Super Oscar driving lights fitted with spread beam lenses. They
are exy, and these days there is a (slightly) cheaper rally light which has
a lens that is larger than a Super Oscar. Its really big, like a truck
driving light. It has a black plastic back, shaped like a broad based cone
with globe adjustment in the centre rear. I dont know the brand but maybe
some one else can identify it from my description. These driving lights are
popular with the club rally guys who like frequent dark Victorian forests in
the depths of a wet winters night - you cant get a better recommendation
than that.

For a really good bolt in alternator, either a new Bosch at about $200 or
get one from an 83/4 EFI Skyline about $20 to $40 at the wreckers. These
had an 85AMP alternator and it bolts to any Lseries mounting bracket. The
Skyline alternators dont just drop in as they are a bit larger in the body,
you need to remove the oil filter to fit it in from the top.
Dont forget to add the extra 30 amp wire from the "batt /+ve" terminal on
the alternator to the starter solenoid terminal, as Terry says.

To get these lights try any motor parts retailer that is a rally specialist.
Most 4WD businesses also stock good lighting gear as all Jap 4WD's have
really crap lights/wiring and need all the same bits as a 1600 for a
lighting upgrade.
