Yeah that is right.
Look at the autospeed article by Julian Edgar.

He made an amplifier to trick the G-Force sensor in his R32-GTR.
He could adjust the 4wd from full 50-50 4wd for driving in the wet to stock 100-0 2wd.
He was quite critical of the handling and traction of the R32 in suburban driving.
The modification sounded like it made a great difference.
Look at the cool pics.
There has got to be some progressively locking diff-lock type arrangement in the 
centre diff.
The torque guage probably uses the fluid pressure in the locking solenoid to give you 
the reading
