Paul,
      You need to swap the struts from left to right because the caliper
hits the steering link/tie-rod end nut stopping the caliper from "sliding"
when the brakes are applied.
                    With the springs you could try tying them in with wire
if they only just don`t remain captive, but i would recommend getting them
replaced.
