Brett,
The
wire that you've broken on an engine with EGR fitted, is most likely to
be the Earth or Ground wire for the EGR control relay. This
wires provides ground to the relay via a temp switch which is located in
the thermostat housing. No real harm done, although the EGR valve does serve a
good purpose to clean emissions, and it's one of such systems that doesn't cost
you much if any power output.
