AFAIK
Radar detectors use a Gunn Diode and a Local Oscillator to convert the microwave radar 
signal that it recieves into a low frequency signal for processing.
Unfortunately the local oscillator signal leaks out from the Gunn Diode and can be 
listed to in the same way that you listen for the police radar.

In almost every old radar detector this local oscillator (leakage) signal was 11.5GHz.
The VG2 detection system in the USA listened out for this 11.5GHz signal. 
Newer, VG2 undetectable, radar detectors don't use this 11.5GHz LO freq. The 
manufacturer chooses some obscure frequency, or uses a variable frequency or a 
multi-stage LO or something.
Once people know what frequency LO a radar detector uses they can make a detector 
detector to listen for it.
Sometimes Police modify captured radar detectors for this purpose.

So does anyone actually know how the detector detectors work? like..  i would have thought a radar detector would be passive,  so it only recieves a signal, not transmits.
