All Australian built 1600's from 1970 on had the collapsable steering column (mandatory in all oz built cars from then on).  You should still find these readily at a specialist wrecker and most private wrecks would still have them intact as they dont wear out easily. 180B steering boxes are identical, and 180B columns can also be used, with very slight modification to the panel which bolts it to the firewall (of course not then "genuine" if you are going historic).

You should get the steering linkages also (Drag link, tie rods, L&R steering arms) as they are thicker diameter than the earlier ones and dont bend as easily when used hard in rallying.  The taper bolts used in the ball joints are also thicker.

Subject: Datsun collapsible steering column

G’day all

I am strengthening my old group G P510 shell and I am going to get all the fabrication done whilst on the rotisserie, for ease of planning and fitting.  The steering column I have always used is a spear type, connected into the steering box.  I plan to fit an inline steering quickener in the column and hence wouldn’t mind a collapsible with couplings to the steering box.

Has anyone had any experience in sourcing a collapsible column that has coupling connections to the steering box?

Thanks

Barney
