In a proper cluster, this is not an issue. There are lots of ways to get stats out of memcached. Doing it from the client that requested data is not the right way.

There are tools like http://wanderr.com/jay/memcached-status-like-apc-status/2010/04/15/ to show you what your memcached servers are doing.
