you are right! it was chrome auto uncompressing it but leaving the file name intact.
on OSX with chrome 1576960 Jan 4 23:16 memcached-1.4.25.tar.gz with safari 359709 Nov 20 02:04 memcached-1.4.25.tar.gz that is weird. But thank you. the file verify correctly now.
