does memcache lose information?

I am using memcache in my authentication system, and memcache seems to 
be losing data sometimes. Can this happen? If it can, in what 
circumstances. Memcache is sharing about one GB of memory on one server 
only, and the maximum memory occupied was about 5 MB so it isn't because 
of lack of memory. Is it a possibility that the connection times out ? 
The server is linked on Gigabit and I have not noticed any problems on 
the connection. What else can cause loss of data on memcache?
