I wouldn't expect it to be easy, but you can pull my current source here:

memcachedConstants.py and testClient.py are the interesting parts. The latter contains both a client library and a server compliance test (that uses the client library).

I think it's readable enough, but trying to rewrite it in perl doesn't sound that fun to me.
