Well, my client validates the keys before trying to send stuff over the wire. I've run into issues where someone had a space in a key and it just caused the messages to be wrong on the wire.

It's in my best interest to refuse to transmit anything that we declare invalid. I *could* have different validation by protocol, but it seems like that'd just cause confusion.
