Best Java client ?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a Java memcached client that 
performs well ? We found that the performance of the Whalin client 
leaves much to be desired - it does things like single byte reads which 
not only increase latency but also consume much more cpu.
Are there any plans to improve the Whalin client ?
