I think all the time and energy that's spent trying to avoid Javascript is hilarious. So far there's RubyJS, Red, HotRuby, and probably some others that I'm not aware of. All so that people don't have to learn Javascript and can continue doing nothing but Ruby. Javascript is an awesome language in its own right, and libraries like jQuery just make it that much better.
